T Minus 3 Days… January 2, 2011

I will be in Japan in about 3 days.  It’s so nerve wracking and exciting!  I’ve been running around trying to get my room in order before I leave, while at the same time trying to spend time with friends.  Sadly, I just ended up running out of time and I won’t really be able to see anyone else before I leave.

As of yesterday, my Tumblr project is now live!  You can check it out over at One Year Photos.  The concept, in case it wasn’t clear, is that I’ll be taking and posting one photo per day for the next year.  I’ve been trying to make my life more interesting (or at least make it look more interesting) so hopefully this will give me motivation to actually go out and do things more often!

What I have planned for when I go to Japan, is to keep a weekly vlog over on Youtube where I can do a mashup of video, photo, and my own commentary on the things I’ve been doing overseas.

Should have called it the “2011 Revival” January 1, 2011

I nearly forgot I was going to post a backlog of my activities from the latter half of the year.  The summer was mostly spent working, and the semester was mostly spent studying (okay, not really).  I did manage to get out here and there though.

2010 Revival December 28, 2010

I’m going to try reviving this blog.  I just don’t see a point in starting a new one when I already have this one broken in.

A few changes:

  • New layout.
  • New format including more organized categories and consistent tags.
  • Regular updates (or I’ll be damned)

First of all, I feel I should spiff this joint up a bit by giving it a nicer/cleaner layout than before.  Secondly, I plan on making it less trains of thought and more structured subject-oriented posts.  I’m going to go ahead and keep everything in a neat little category and tag so it’s easy to find older posts.

Lastly, I’m going to try everything in my power to do regular updates.  I suppose for now I’ll do a weekly update on Sunday until I get into a routine where I can do more.  I will still keep in doing my self-important Rant Wednesdays, but instead I’ll limit them to once or twice a month.

While I could just delete the other posts and start fresh, I think instead what I’ll do is get rid of the ones that are all talk and no substance.  I’ll also post a backlog of interesting things to keep occupied until the new year.

Yep, that’s my plan.

I can’t seem to keep this updated with consistency, can I?

Here’s what I’ve been up to:

  • Dyed my hair orange.
  • Got a job at Spencer’s Gifts

In my head this seemed like it would be more to talk about…

First of all, I love my job and I couldn’t ask for more.  I’ve only been working there for a couple weeks and I think it’s wonderful so far.  My coworkers are awesome and the work is just the right amount of demanding.  I’m still getting used to being on my feet for hours on end, but other than that I have no complaints (except of course the stupid teenagers but I hate stupid teenagers regardless).

At the end of May I procured some Special Effects brand orange dye online.  After waiting for a friend to become available to dye it for a couple weeks, I ended up just doing it myself.  Here are the results:

Spring has Definitely Sprung April 20, 2010

With the warm weather finally being consistent, it makes me anticipate the arrival of the warmer days of spring and eventually summer.  Naturally with warmer weather comes the weather appropriate clothes and the changing of the seasons is always a good time to invest in some new threads.  What better way to expand your wardrobe than to do it on a budget?

This summer, I think I’d like to invest in a few cute sundresses and a decent pair of sandals.  Something that can be dressed up or down and be stylish in any situation.  It would seem that the trend is still with earth tones and gladiator sandals, but I prefer to keep things cute with pastels and flat, peeptoe styles.

When shopping around for your pair of spring/summer shoes there are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Will this style fit my own style?
  2. Will this color match most of my wardrobe?
  3. What is my budget?

If your wardrobe leans more toward one fashion style than another, then get something to fit that aesthetic.  When picking a color, pick something that can match the most clothing possible.  This doesn’t necessarily mean to pick a neutral color, bright colors can be easily tied into outfits through accessories or by matching with colors in the fabrics.

My personal budget is small, so here are some shoe finds for under $25.

These payless flats are both bright and subdued.  With their simple design they can fit well with most styles and the yellow version (they also come in brown) adds a splash of color to any outfit.

From the always wonderful 15DollarStore, these red polkadot flats can add a bold and retro flair to your summer outfits.

Zapatopia on Ebay has a nice selection of cute slingback peeptoes in an array of colors.  The pink version with the knotted bow adds a cute, feminine touch to an outfit, whether you’re wearing pants or dresses.

Short shorts made of linens, denim mini skirts, or sundresses go great with these styles of shoes.  Sundresses make a great addition to a summer wardrobe because of their versatility.  They can be worn on their own with some nice sandals and a sunhat for a nice day in the sun, or wear them with a pair of kitten heels and a cardigan for a night out.  You can find them in a variety of colors and prints, as well as different styles like empire waists or full circle skirts.

Personally, I plan to put my sewing abilities to work and make my own sun dresses.  Simplicity has some nice patterns, and fabric stores typically carry pre-shirred fabrics that are simply just sewn together to make a dress.

Accessorize your summer look with some beaded jewelry, big sunglasses, and bright nail polish!

A while back I mentioned how I made some awesome orange chicken but never got around to posting a photo of my masterpiece.  Since then, I’ve been making a variety of things and saving pictures of them to share.  Now that I’m feeling less stressed out about life, I’ve found the time to sit down and start updating again.

A couple weeks ago I visited New York City for a day to go shopping and visit friends.  Since I didn’t have much time to spend, I unfortunately didn’t get to do as much as I wanted but I still had fun anyway!  I hope to visit them again soon.

Normally I would be gun-ho about being snowed in for a week and not having classes, but then it occurred to me that if the university is closed then work is closed.  Oh no, I’m not making any money!  Not cool, man.  I’m also waiting on a letter of recommendation, so the snow is hindering that as well.

I haven’t left my room for more than an hour a day since Tuesday when the wind kicked in so I haven’t really gotten pictures of that half of this storm, but I do have pictures of the initial snowfall to share!

The beginning of the snow fall on the 5th.

More pictures under the jump. (more…)
